Shehadbeenrearednobetterthanhermaster’sbeast—lookeduponmerelyasavaluableandhandsomeanimal—andconsequentlypossessedbutalimitedamountofknowledge. Andyetafaintlightcastitsraysoverherintellect,sothatitwasnotwhollydark. ShehadadimperceptionofGodandofeternity,andastillmoredimperceptionofaSaviourwhohaddiedevenforsuchasher. Sheentertainedbutconfusednotionsofafuturelife—notcomprehendingthedistinctionbetweenthecorporealandspiritualexistence. Happiness,inhermind,wasexemptionfromstripes—fromlabor—fromthecrueltyofmastersandoverseers. Herideaofthejoyofheavenwassimplyrest,andisfullyexpressedintheselinesofamelancholybard:
"Iasknoparadiseonhigh,
Withcaresonearthoppressed,
TheonlyheavenforwhichIsigh,
Isrest,eternalrest."
Itisamistakenopinionthatprevailsinsomequarters,thattheslavedoesnotunderstandtheterm—doesnotcomprehendtheideaoffreedom.
