Isaidtoher—tobesure,Ifeltbad,andwasstiff,andthatmyfootpainedme,thestubsandthornshavingsotornit,butthoughtsuchexercisewouldnothurtme,andthatitwasagreatpleasuretoworkforsogoodamistress. Thereuponshereturnedtothegreathouse,andforthreedaysIwasdiligentinthegarden,cleaningthewalks,weedingtheflowerbeds,andpullinguptherankgrassbeneaththejessaminevines,whichthegentleandgeneroushandofmyprotectresshadtaughttoclamberalongthewalls.
Thefourthmorning,havingbecomerecruitedandrefreshed,MasterFordorderedmetomakereadytoaccompanyhimtothebayou. Therewasbutonesaddlehorseattheopening,alltheotherswiththemuleshavingbeensentdowntotheplantation. IsaidIcouldwalk,andbiddingSallyandJohngoodbye,lefttheopening,trottingalongbythehorse’sside.
