           Shethoughtoftherobinandofthewayheseemedtosinghissongather,andassherememberedthetree-topheperchedonshestoppedrathersuddenlyonthepath.

           “Ibelievethattreewasinthesecretgarden—Ifeelsureitwas,”shesaid.“Therewasawallroundtheplaceandtherewasnodoor.”

           Shewalkedbackintothefirstkitchen-gardenshehadenteredandfoundtheoldmandiggingthere.Shewentandstoodbesidehimandwatchedhimafewmomentsinhercoldlittleway.Hetooknonoticeofherandsoatlastshespoketohim.

           “Ihavebeenintotheothergardens,”shesaid.

           “Therewasnothin’topreventthee,”heansweredcrustily.

           “Iwentintotheorchard.”

           “Therewasnodogatth’doortobitethee,”heanswered.

           “Therewasnodoorthereintotheothergarden,”saidMary.

           “Whatgarden?”hesaidinaroughvoice,stoppinghisdiggingforamoment.

           “Theoneontheothersideofthewall,”answeredMistressMary.“Therearetreesthere—Isawthetopsofthem.Abirdwitharedbreastwassittingononeofthemandhesang.”

           Tohersurprisethesurlyoldweather-beatenfaceactuallychangeditsexpression.Aslowsmilespreadoveritandthegardenerlookedquitedifferent.Itmadeherthinkthatitwascurioushowmuchnicerapersonlookedwhenhesmiled.Shehadnotthoughtofitbefore.

           Heturnedabouttotheorchardsideofhisgardenandbegantowhistle—alowsoftwhistle.Shecouldnotunderstandhowsuchasurlymancouldmakesuchacoaxingsound.
