           Marymadenoresponse.Shewentdownthepathandthroughthesecondgreendoor.There,shefoundmorewallsandwintervegetablesandglassframes,butinthesecondwalltherewasanothergreendooranditwasnotopen.Perhapsitledintothegardenwhichnoonehadseenfortenyears.Asshewasnotatallatimidchildandalwaysdidwhatshewantedtodo,Marywenttothegreendoorandturnedthehandle.Shehopedthedoorwouldnotopenbecauseshewantedtobesureshehadfoundthemysteriousgarden—butitdidopenquiteeasilyandshewalkedthroughitandfoundherselfinanorchard.Therewerewallsallrounditalsoandtreestrainedagainstthem,andtherewerebarefruit-treesgrowinginthewinter-brownedgrass—buttherewasnogreendoortobeseenanywhere.Marylookedforit,andyetwhenshehadenteredtheupperendofthegardenshehadnoticedthatthewalldidnotseemtoendwiththeorchardbuttoextendbeyonditasifitenclosedaplaceattheotherside.Shecouldseethetopsoftreesabovethewall,andwhenshestoodstillshesawabirdwithabrightredbreastsittingonthetopmostbranchofoneofthem,andsuddenlyheburstintohiswintersong—almostasifhehadcaughtsightofherandwascallingtoher.
