           OfcoursethiswasthewrongMagic—tobeginbysaying“toolate.”EvenColincouldhavetoldhimthat.ButheknewnothingofMagic—eitherblackorwhite.Thishehadyettolearn.HewonderedifSusanSowerbyhadtakencourageandwrittentohimonlybecausethemotherlycreaturehadrealizedthattheboywasmuchworse—wasfatallyill.Ifhehadnotbeenunderthespellofthecuriouscalmnesswhichhadtakenpossessionofhimhewouldhavebeenmorewretchedthanever.Butthecalmhadbroughtasortofcourageandhopewithit.Insteadofgivingwaytothoughtsoftheworstheactuallyfoundhewastryingtobelieveinbetterthings.

           “CoulditbepossiblethatsheseesthatImaybeabletodohimgoodandcontrolhim?”hethought.“IwillgoandseeheronmywaytoMisselthwaite.”

           Butwhenonhiswayacrossthemoorhestoppedthecarriageatthecottage,sevenoreightchildrenwhowereplayingaboutgatheredinagroupandbobbingsevenoreightfriendlyandpolitecurtsiestoldhimthattheirmotherhadgonetotheothersideofthemoorearlyinthemorningtohelpawomanwhohadanewbaby.
