XXV. The Curtain

           

           TheywenttotheIndianroomandamusedthemselveswiththeivoryelephants.Theyfoundtherose-coloredbrocadeboudoirandtheholeinthecushionthemousehadleft,butthemicehadgrownupandrunawayandtheholewasempty.TheysawmoreroomsandmademorediscoveriesthanMaryhadmadeonherfirstpilgrimage.Theyfoundnewcorridorsandcornersandflightsofstepsandnewoldpicturestheylikedandweirdoldthingstheydidnotknowtheuseof.Itwasacuriouslyentertainingmorningandthefeelingofwanderingaboutinthesamehousewithotherpeoplebutatthesametimefeelingasifoneweremilesawayfromthemwasafascinatingthing.

           “I’mgladwecame,”Colinsaid.“IneverknewIlivedinsuchabigqueeroldplace.Ilikeit.Wewillrambleabouteveryrainyday.Weshallalwaysbefindingnewqueercornersandthings.”

           ThatmorningtheyhadfoundamongotherthingssuchgoodappetitesthatwhentheyreturnedtoColin’sroomitwasnotpossibletosendtheluncheonawayuntouched.

           WhenthenursecarriedthetraydownstairssheslappeditdownonthekitchendressersothatMrs.Loomis,thecook,couldseethehighlypolisheddishesandplates.

           “Lookatthat!”shesaid.“Thisisahouseofmystery,andthosetwochildrenarethegreatestmysteriesinit.”

           “Iftheykeepthatupeveryday,”saidthestrongyoungfootmanJohn,“there’dbesmallwonderthatheweighstwiceasmuchtodayashedidamonthago.Ishouldhavetogiveupmyplaceintime,forfearofdoingmymusclesaninjury.”

           ThatafternoonMarynoticedthatsomethingnewhadhappenedinColin’sroom.
