           Thewomanlookedfrightened,butsheonlystammeredthattheAyahcouldnotcomeandwhenMarythrewherselfintoapassionandbeatandkickedher,shelookedonlymorefrightenedandrepeatedthatitwasnotpossiblefortheAyahtocometoMissieSahib.

           Therewassomethingmysteriousintheairthatmorning.Nothingwasdoneinitsregularorderandseveralofthenativeservantsseemedmissing,whilethosewhomMarysawslunkorhurriedaboutwithashyandscaredfaces.ButnoonewouldtellheranythingandherAyahdidnotcome.Shewasactuallyleftaloneasthemorningwenton,andatlastshewanderedoutintothegardenandbegantoplaybyherselfunderatreeneartheveranda.Shepretendedthatshewasmakingaflower-bed,andshestuckbigscarlethibiscusblossomsintolittleheapsofearth,allthetimegrowingmoreandmoreangryandmutteringtoherselfthethingsshewouldsayandthenamesshewouldcallSaidiewhenshereturned.

           “Pig!Pig!DaughterofPigs!”shesaid,becausetocallanativeapigistheworstinsultofall.

           Shewasgrindingherteethandsayingthisoverandoveragainwhensheheardhermothercomeoutontheverandawithsomeone.
