Marydidasshewastoldandreturnedtoherfootstool.
“Sheismuchprettierthanyou,”shesaid,“buthereyesarejustlikeyours—atleasttheyarethesameshapeandcolor.Whyisthecurtaindrawnoverher?”
Hemoveduncomfortably.

TherewereafewmomentsofsilenceandthenMaryspoke.

“ShewoulddoasItoldhertodo,”heanswered.“AndIshouldtellherthatIwantedyoutocomehereandtalktomeeveryday.Iamgladyoucame.”
“SoamI,”saidMary.“IwillcomeasoftenasIcan,but”—shehesitated—“Ishallhavetolookeverydayforthegardendoor.”
