           Hedroppedbackonhispillowandlaytherewithanoddexpressiononhisface.

           “Ineverhadasecret,”hesaid,“exceptthatoneaboutnotlivingtogrowup.Theydon’tknowIknowthat,soitisasortofsecret.ButIlikethiskindbetter.”

           “Ifyouwon’tmakethemtakeyoutothegarden,”pleadedMary,“perhaps—IfeelalmostsureIcanfindouthowtogetinsometime.Andthen—ifthedoctorwantsyoutogooutinyourchair,andifyoucanalwaysdowhatyouwanttodo,perhaps—perhapswemightfindsomeboywhowouldpushyou,andwecouldgoaloneanditwouldalwaysbeasecretgarden.”

           “Ishould—like—that,”hesaidveryslowly,hiseyeslookingdreamy.“Ishouldlikethat.Ishouldnotmindfreshairinasecretgarden.”

           Marybegantorecoverherbreathandfeelsaferbecausetheideaofkeepingthesecretseemedtopleasehim.Shefeltalmostsurethatifshekeptontalkingandcouldmakehimseethegardeninhismindasshehadseenithewouldlikeitsomuchthathecouldnotbeartothinkthateverybodymighttrampintoitwhentheychose.

           “I’lltellyouwhatIthinkitwouldbelike,ifwecouldgointoit,”shesaid.“Ithasbeenshutupsolongthingshavegrownintoatangleperhaps.
