Themosthauntingtimeatwhichtoseethemisattheturnofthemoon,whentheyutterstrangewailingcries;butthelagoonisdangerousformortalsthen,anduntiltheeveningofwhichwehavenowtotell,Wendyhadneverseenthelagoonbymoonlight,lessfromfear,forofcoursePeterwouldhaveaccompaniedher,thanbecauseshehadstrictrulesabouteveryonebeinginbedbyseven.Shewasoftenatthelagoon,however,onsunnydaysafterrain,whenthemermaidscomeupinextraordinarynumberstoplaywiththeirbubbles.Thebubblesofmanycoloursmadeinrainbowwatertheytreatasballs,hittingthemgailyfromonetoanotherwiththeirtails,andtryingtokeepthemintherainbowtilltheyburst.Thegoalsareateachendoftherainbow,andthekeepersonlyareallowedtousetheirhands.Sometimeshundredsofmermaidswillbeplayinginthelagoonatatime,anditisquiteaprettysight.
Butthemomentthechildrentriedtojoinintheyhadtoplaybythemselves,forthemermaidsimmediatelydisappeared.Neverthelesswehaveproofthattheysecretlywatchedtheinterlopers,andwerenotabovetakinganideafromthem;forJohnintroducedanewwayofhittingthebubble,withtheheadinsteadofthehand,andthemermaidgoal-keepersadoptedit.ThisistheonemarkthatJohnhasleftontheNeverland.
Itmustalsohavebeenratherprettytoseethechildrenrestingonarockforhalfanhouraftertheirmiddaymeal.Wendyinsistedontheirdoingthis,andithadtobearealresteventhoughthemealwasmake-believe.
