Havingdisembarkedunobservedamidtheusualbustleofthecity,Craekeatoncedirectedhisstepstowardsthehousewhichwehavejustdescribed,andwhich—white,trim,andtidy,evenmorecleanlyscouredandmorecarefullywaxedinthehiddencornersthanintheplaceswhichwereexposedtoview—enclosedatrulyhappymortal.
Thishappymortal,raraavis,wasDr.vanBaerle,thegodsonofCorneliusdeWitt.Hehadinhabitedthesamehouseeversincehischildhood,foritwasthehouseinwhichhisfatherandgrandfather,oldestablishedprincelymerchantsoftheprincelycityofDort,wereborn.
