           InonemomentCorneliuswasdisarmed,andGryphusraisedandsupported;and,bellowingwithrageandpain,hewasabletocountonhisbackandshouldersthebruiseswhichwerebeginningtoswelllikethehillsdottingtheslopesofamountainridge.

           Aprotocoloftheviolencepracticedbytheprisoneragainsthisjailerwasimmediatelydrawnup,andasitwasmadeonthedepositionsofGryphus,itcertainlycouldnotbesaidtobetootame;theprisonerbeingchargedwithneithermorenorlessthanwithanattempttomurder,foralongtimepremeditated,withopenrebellion.

           Duringthistime,theguardswhohadseizedCorneliusbusiedthemselvesincharitablyinformingtheirprisoneroftheusagesandcustomsofLoewestein,whichhoweverheknewaswellastheydid.Theregulationshadbeenreadtohimatthemomentofhisenteringtheprison,andcertainarticlesinthemremainedfixedinhismemory.

           AmongotherthingstheytoldhimthatthisregulationhadbeencarriedouttoitsfullextentinthecaseofaprisonernamedMathias,whoin1668,thatistosay,fiveyearsbefore,hadcommittedamuchlessviolentactofrebellionthanthatofwhichCorneliuswasguilty.Hehadfoundhissouptoohot,andthrownitattheheadofthechiefturnkey,whoinconsequenceofthisablutionhadbeenputtotheinconvenienceofhavinghisskincomeoffashewipedhisface.
