The Two Brothers

           

           Healsothoughtofhisbrother;andwhilstthelatterwasthusvividlypresenttohismindthedooropened,andJohnentered,hurryingtothebedsideoftheprisoner,whostretchedouthisbrokenlimbsandhishandstiedupinbandagestowardsthatgloriousbrother,whomhenowexcelled,notinservicesrenderedtothecountry,butinthehatredwhichtheDutchborehim.

           Johntenderlykissedhisbrotherontheforehead,andputhissorehandsgentlybackonthemattress.

           “Cornelius,mypoorbrother,youaresufferinggreatpain,areyounot?”

           “Iamsufferingnolonger,sinceIseeyou,mybrother.”

           “Oh,mypoordearCornelius!Ifeelmostwretchedtoseeyouinsuchastate.”

           “And,indeed,Ihavethoughtmoreofyouthanofmyself;andwhilsttheyweretorturingme,Ineverthoughtofutteringacomplaint,exceptonce,tosay,‘Poorbrother!’Butnowthatyouarehere,letusforgetall.Youarecomingtotakemeaway,areyounot?”

           “Iam.”

           “Iamquitehealed;helpmetogetup,andyoushallseehowIcanwalk.”

           “Youwillnothavetowalkfar,asIhavemycoachnearthepond,behindTilly’sdragoons.”

           “Tilly’sdragoons!Whataretheynearthepondfor?”

           “Well,”saidtheGrandPensionarywithamelancholysmilewhichwashabitualtohim,“thegentlemenattheTown-hallexpectthatthepeopleattheHaguewouldliketoseeyoudepart,andthereissomeapprehensionofatumult.”

           “Ofatumult?”repliedCornelius,fixinghiseyesonhisperplexedbrother;“atumult?”

           “Yes,Cornelius.
