           RosathereforeappliedherselfmostdiligentlytoreadingpoorCorneliusdeWitt’sBible,onthesecondflyleafofwhichthelastwillofCorneliusvanBaerlewaswritten.

           “Alas!”shemuttered,whenperusingagainthisdocument,whichsheneverfinishedwithoutatear,thepearloflove,rollingfromherlimpideyesonherpalecheeks“alas!atthattimeIthoughtforonemomenthelovedme.”

           PoorRosa!shewasmistaken.Neverhadtheloveoftheprisonerbeenmoresincerethanatthetimeatwhichwearenowarrived,wheninthecontestbetweentheblacktulipandRosathetuliphadhadtoyieldtoherthefirstandforemostplaceinCornelius’sheart.

           ButRosawasnotawareofit.

           Havingfinishedreading,shetookherpen,andbeganwithaslaudablediligencethebyfarmoredifficulttaskofwriting.

           As,however,RosawasalreadyabletowritealegiblehandwhenCorneliussouncautiouslyopenedhisheart,shedidnotdespairofprogressingquicklyenoughtowrite,aftereightdaysatthelatest,totheprisoneranaccountofhistulip.
