Amidthesecries,thecitizensranalongfasterandfaster,cockingtheirmuskets,brandishingtheirhatchets,andlookingdeathanddefianceinalldirections.
Noviolence,however,hadasyetbeencommitted;andthefileofhorsemenwhowereguardingtheapproachesoftheBuytenhofremainedcool,unmoved,silent,muchmorethreateningintheirimpassibilitythanallthiscrowdofburghers,withtheircries,theiragitation,andtheirthreats.Themenontheirhorses,indeed,stoodlikesomanystatues,undertheeyeoftheirchief,CountTilly,thecaptainofthemountedtroopsoftheHague,whohadhissworddrawn,buthelditwithitspointdownwards,inalinewiththestrapsofhisstirrup.
Thistroop,theonlydefenceoftheprison,overawedbyitsfirmattitudenotonlythedisorderlyriotousmassofthepopulace,butalsothedetachmentoftheburgherguard,which,beingplacedoppositetheBuytenhoftosupportthesoldiersinkeepingorder,gavetotherioterstheexampleofseditiouscries,shouting,—
“HurrahforOrange!Downwiththetraitors!”
ThepresenceofTillyandhishorsemen,indeed,exercisedasalutarycheckonthesecivicwarriors;butbydegreestheywaxedmoreandmoreangrybytheirownshouts,andastheywerenotabletounderstandhowanyonecouldhavecouragewithoutshowingitbycries,theyattributedthesilenceofthedragoonstopusillanimity,andadvancedonesteptowardstheprison,withalltheturbulentmobfollowingintheirwake.
