           Hewaspanic-stricken. Heranfuriouslytoandfro,dodgingwhentherewasnoneedtododge,andinhisanxietytoseeoneverysideofhimatonce,stumbling. Foramomenthewasdownandtheyheardhisfall. Farawayinthecircumferentialwallalittledoorwaylookedlikeheaven,andhesetoffinawildrushforit. Hedidnotevenlookroundathispursuersuntilitwasgained,andhehadstumbledacrossthebridge,clamberedalittlewayamongtherocks,tothesurpriseanddismayofayoungllama,whowentleapingoutofsight,andlaydownsobbingforbreath. 

           Andsohiscoupd’itatcametoanend. 

           HestayedoutsidethewallofthevalleyoftheBlindfortwonightsanddayswithoutfoodorshelter,andmeditatedupontheunexpected. Duringthesemeditationsherepeatedveryfrequentlyandalwayswithaprofoundernoteofderisiontheexplodedproverb: "IntheCountryoftheBlindtheOne-EyedManisKing." Hethoughtchieflyofwaysoffightingandconqueringthesepeople,anditgrewclearthatforhimnopracticablewaywaspossible. Hehadnoweapons,andnowitwouldbehardtogetone.
