           Andtheeldestoftheblindmenexplainedtohimlifeandphilosophyandreligion, howthattheworld(meaningtheirvalley)hadbeenfirstanemptyhollowintherocks,andthenhadcome,first,inanimatethingswithoutthegiftoftouch,andllamasandafewothercreaturesthathadlittlesense,andthenmen,andatlastangels,whomonecouldhearsingingandmakingflutteringsounds,butwhomnoonecouldtouchatall, whichpuzzledNunezgreatlyuntilhethoughtofthebirds. 

           HewentontotellNunezhowthistimehadbeendividedintothewarmandthecold,whicharetheblindequivalentsofdayandnight,andhowitwasgoodtosleepinthewarmandworkduringthecold,sothatnow,butforhisadvent,thewholetownoftheblindwouldhavebeenasleep. HesaidNunezmusthavebeenspeciallycreatedtolearnandservethewisdom,theyhadacquired,andthatforallhismentalincoherencyandstumblingbehaviourhemusthavecourage,anddohisbesttolearn,andatthatallthepeopleinthedoorwaymurmuredencouragingly. Hesaidthenight—fortheblindcalltheirdaynight—wasnowfargone,anditbehovedeveryonetogobacktosleep. HeaskedNunezifheknewhowtosleep,andNunezsaidhedid,butthatbeforesleephewantedfood. 

           Theybroughthimfood—llama’smilkinabowl,androughsaltedbread—andledhimintoalonelyplace,toeatoutoftheirhearing,andafterwardstoslumberuntilthechillofthemountaineveningrousedthemtobegintheirdayagain. ButNunezslumberednotatall.
