           CavorwascontinuallymakingcorrectionsinhispreviousaccountsoftheSelenitesasfreshfactsfloweduponhimtomodifyhisconclusions,andaccordinglyonegivesthequotationsthatfollowwithacertainamountofreservation.Theyarequotedfromtheninth,thirteenth,andsixteenthmessages,and,altogethervagueandfragmentaryastheyare,theyprobablygiveascompleteapictureofthesociallifeofthisstrangecommunityasmankindcannowhopetohaveformanygenerations.

           “Inthemoon,”saysCavor,“everycitizenknowshisplace.Heisborntothatplace,andtheelaboratedisciplineoftrainingandeducationandsurgeryheundergoesfitshimatlastsocompletelytoitthathehasneitherideasnororgansforanypurposebeyondit.‘Whyshouldhe?’Phi-oowouldask.If,forexample,aSeleniteisdestinedtobeamathematician,histeachersandtrainerssetoutatoncetothatend.Theycheckanyincipientdispositiontootherpursuits,theyencouragehismathematicalbiaswithaperfectpsychologicalskill.
