“Thesurfaceofthisseamustbeverynearlytwohundredmiles(ifnotmore)belowthelevelofthemoon’sexterior;allthecitiesofthemoonlie,Ilearnt,immediatelyabovethisCentralSea,insuchcavernousspacesandartificialgalleriesasIhavedescribed,andtheycommunicatewiththeexteriorbyenormousverticalshaftswhichopeninvariablyinwhatarecalledbyearthlyastronomersthe‘craters’ofthemoon.ThelidcoveringonesuchapertureIhadalreadyseenduringthewanderingsthathadprecededmycapture.
“UpontheconditionofthelesscentralportionofthemoonIhavenotyetarrivedatverypreciseknowledge.Thereisanenormoussystemofcavernsinwhichthemooncalvesshelterduringthenight;andthereareabattoirsandthelike—inoneoftheseitwasthatIandBedfordfoughtwiththeSelenitebutchers—andIhavesinceseenballoonsladenwithmeatdescendingoutoftheupperdark.
