           ItwouldseemtheSeleniteswhohadcomeuponhimcarriedhimtosomepointintheinteriordown“agreatshaft”bymeansofwhathedescribesas“asortofballoon.”Wegatherfromtheratherconfusedpassageinwhichhedescribesthis,andfromanumberofchanceallusionsandhintsinotherandsubsequentmessages,thatthis“greatshaft”isoneofanenormoussystemofartificialshaftsthatrun,eachfromwhatiscalledalunar“crater,”downwardsforverynearlyahundredmilestowardsthecentralportionofoursatellite.Theseshaftscommunicatebytransversetunnels,theythrowoutabysmalcavernsandexpandintogreatglobularplaces;thewholeofthemoon’ssubstanceforahundredmilesinward,indeed,isamerespongeofrock.“Partly,”saysCavor,“thissponginessisnatural,butverylargelyitisduetotheenormousindustryoftheSelenitesinthepast.Theenormouscircularmoundsoftheexcavatedrockandearthitisthatformthesegreatcirclesaboutthetunnelsknowntoearthlyastronomers(misledbyafalseanalogy)asvolcanoes.”

           Itwasdownthisshafttheytookhim,inthis“sortofballoon”hespeaksof,atfirstintoaninkyblacknessandthenintoaregionofcontinuallyincreasingphosphorescence.Cavor’sdespatchesshowhimtobecuriouslyregardlessofdetailforascientificman,butwegatherthatthislightwasduetothestreamsandcascadesofwater—“nodoubtcontainingsomephosphorescentorganism”—thatflowedevermoreabundantlydownwardtowardstheCentralSea.Andashedescended,hesays,“TheSelenitesalsobecameluminous.
