           ButAlanandClunyweremostofthetimeatthecards,andIamclearthatAlanmusthavebegunbywinning;forIremembersittingup,andseeingthemhardatit,andagreatglitteringpileofasmuchassixtyorahundredguineasonthetable.Itlookedstrangeenough,toseeallthiswealthinanestuponacliff-side,wattledaboutgrowingtrees.Andeventhen,IthoughtitseemeddeepwaterforAlantoberiding,whohadnobetterbattle-horsethanagreenpurseandamatteroffivepounds.

           Theluck,itseems,changedonthesecondday.AboutnoonIwaswakenedasusualfordinner,andasusualrefusedtoeat,andwasgivenadramwithsomebitterinfusionwhichthebarberhadprescribed.ThesunwasshininginattheopendooroftheCage,andthisdazzledandoffendedme.Clunysatatthetable,bitingthepackofcards.Alanhadstoopedoverthebed,andhadhisfaceclosetomyeyes;towhich,troubledastheywerewiththefever,itseemedofthemostshockingbigness.

           Heaskedmeforaloanofmymoney.

           “Whatfor?”saidI.

           “O,justforaloan,”saidhe.

           Onthemorningofthethirdday,whenwehadbeenforty-eighthoursintheCage,Iawokewithagreatreliefofspirits,veryweakandwearyindeed,butseeingthingsoftherightsizeandwiththeirhonest,everydayappearance.
