Nowandthen,indeed,wherewasabigbushofheather,welayawhile,andpanted,andputtingasidetheleaves,lookedbackatthedragoons.Theyhadnotspiedus,fortheyheldstraighton;ahalf-troop,Ithink,coveringabouttwomilesofground,andbeatingitmightythoroughlyastheywent.Ihadawakenedjustintime;alittlelater,andwemusthavefledinfrontofthem,insteadofescapingononeside.Evenasitwas,theleastmisfortunemightbetrayus;andnowandagain,whenagrouseroseoutoftheheatherwithaclapofwings,welayasstillasthedeadandwereafraidtobreathe.
