           WhileIwashailingthebrig,Ispiedatractofwaterlyingbetweenuswherenogreatwavescame,butwhichyetboiledwhitealloverandbristledinthemoonwithringsandbubbles.Sometimesthewholetractswungtooneside,likethetailofaliveserpent;sometimes,foraglimpse,itwouldalldisappearandthenboilupagain.WhatitwasIhadnoguess,whichforthetimeincreasedmyfearofit;butInowknowitmusthavebeentheroostortiderace,whichhadcarriedmeawaysofastandtumbledmeaboutsocruelly,andatlast,asiftiredofthatplay,hadflungoutmeandthespareyarduponitslandwardmargin.

           Inowlayquitebecalmed,andbegantofeelthatamancandieofcoldaswellasofdrowning.TheshoresofEarraidwereclosein;Icouldseeinthemoonlightthedotsofheatherandthesparklingofthemicaintherocks.

           “Well,”thoughtItomyself,“ifIcannotgetasfarasthat,it’sstrange!”

           Ihadnoskillofswimming,EssenWaterbeingsmallinourneighbourhood;butwhenIlaidholdupontheyardwithbotharms,andkickedoutwithbothfeet,IsoonbeguntofindthatIwasmoving.Hardworkitwas,andmortallyslow;butinaboutanhourofkickingandsplashing,Ihadgotwellinbetweenthepointsofasandybaysurroundedbylowhills.

           Theseawasherequitequiet;therewasnosoundofanysurf;themoonshoneclear;andIthoughtinmyheartIhadneverseenaplacesodesertanddesolate
