           OurfirstmeetingwasatanobscurelibraryintheRueMontmartre,wheretheaccidentofourbothbeinginsearchofthesameveryrareandveryremarkablevolume,broughtusintoclosercommunion. Wesaweachotheragainandagain. IwasdeeplyinterestedinthelittlefamilyhistorywhichhedetailedtomewithallthatcandorwhichaFrenchmanindulgeswhenevermereselfisthetheme. Iwasastonished,too,atthevastextentofhisreading;and,aboveall,Ifeltmysoulenkindledwithinmebythewildfervor,andthevividfreshnessofhisimagination. SeekinginParistheobjectsIthensought,Ifeltthatthesocietyofsuchamanwouldbetomeatreasurebeyondprice;andthisfeelingIfranklyconfidedtohim.
