           Rushingtothebuilding,itperceivedthelightning-rod,clamberedupwithinconceivableagility,graspedtheshutter,whichwasthrownfullybackagainstthewall,and,byitsmeans,swungitselfdirectlyupontheheadboardofthebed.Thewholefeatdidnotoccupyaminute.TheshutterwaskickedopenagainbytheOurang-Outangasitenteredtheroom. 

           Thesailor,inthemeantime,wasbothrejoicedandperplexed.Hehadstronghopesofnowrecapturingthebrute,asitcouldscarcelyescapefromthetrapintowhichithadventured,exceptbytherod,whereitmightbeinterceptedasitcamedown.Ontheotherhand,therewasmuchcauseforanxietyastowhatitmightdointhehouse.Thislatterreflectionurgedthemanstilltofollowthefugitive.Alightning-rodisascendedwithoutdifficulty,especiallybyasailor;but,whenhehadarrivedashighasthewindow,whichlayfartohisleft,hiscareerwasstopped;themostthathecouldaccomplishwastoreachoversoastoobtainaglimpseoftheinterioroftheroom.Atthisglimpsehenearlyfellfromhisholdthroughexcessofhorror.Nowitwasthatthosehideousshrieksaroseuponthenight,whichhadstartledfromslumbertheinmatesoftheRueMorgue.MadameL’Espanayeandherdaughter,habitedintheirnightclothes,hadapparentlybeenarrangingsomepapersintheironchestalreadymentioned,whichhadbeenwheeledintothemiddleoftheroom.Itwasopen,anditscontentslaybesideitonthefloor.
