           “Theapartmentwasinthewildestdisorder—thefurniturebrokenandthrownaboutinalldirections.Therewasonlyonebedstead;andfromthisthebedhadbeenremoved,andthrownintothemiddleofthefloor.Onachairlayarazor,besmearedwithblood.Onthehearthweretwoorthreelongandthicktressesofgreyhumanhair,alsodabbledinblood,andseemingtohavebeenpulledoutbytheroots.UponthefloorwerefoundfourNapoleons,anear-ringoftopaz,threelargesilverspoons,threesmallerofmetald’Alger,andtwobags,containingnearlyfourthousandfrancsingold.Thedrawersofabureau,whichstoodinonecorner,wereopen,andhadbeen,apparently,rifled,althoughmanyarticlesstillremainedinthem.Asmallironsafewasdiscoveredunderthebed(notunderthebedstead).Itwasopen,withthekeystillinthedoor.Ithadnocontentsbeyondafewoldletters,andotherpapersoflittleconsequence.
