           “Well,MissFlynn,atanyrateitmustbeagreatcomfortforyoutoknowthatyoudidallyoucouldforhim.Youwerebothverykindtohim,Imustsay.”

           Elizasmoothedherdressoverherknees.

           “Ah,poorJames!”shesaid.“Godknowswedoneallwecould,aspooraswearewewouldn’tseehimwantanythingwhilehewasinit.”

           Nanniehadleanedherheadagainstthesofa-pillowandseemedabouttofallasleep.

           “There’spoorNannie,”saidEliza,lookingather,“she’sworeout.Alltheworkwehad,sheandme,gettinginthewomantowashhimandthenlayinghimoutandthenthecoffinandthenarrangingabouttheMassinthechapel.OnlyforFatherO’RourkeIdon’tknowwhatwe’ddoneatall.ItwashimbroughtusallthemflowersandthemtwocandlesticksoutofthechapelandwroteoutthenoticefortheFreeman’sGeneralandtookchargeofallthepapersforthecemeteryandpoorJames’sinsurance.”
