Hebecameseriousandsilentwhenhehadsaidthis.Histonguewastiredforhehadbeentalkingalltheafternooninapublic-houseinDorsetStreet.MostpeopleconsideredLenehanaleechbut,inspiteofthisreputation,hisadroitnessandeloquencehadalwayspreventedhisfriendsfromforminganygeneralpolicyagainsthim.Hehadabravemannerofcominguptoapartyoftheminabarandofholdinghimselfnimblyatthebordersofthecompanyuntilhewasincludedinaround.Hewasasportingvagrantarmedwithavaststockofstories,limericksandriddles.Hewasinsensitivetoallkindsofdiscourtesy.Nooneknewhowheachievedthesterntaskofliving,buthisnamewasvaguelyassociatedwithracingtissues.
“Andwheredidyoupickherup,Corley?”heasked.
