FreddyMalins,whowasnearingtheclimaxofhisstory,wavedtheofferasideimpatientlybutMr.Browne,havingfirstcalledFreddyMalins’attentiontoadisarrayinhisdress,filledoutandhandedhimafullglassoflemonade.FreddyMalins’lefthandacceptedtheglassmechanically,hisrighthandbeingengagedinthemechanicalreadjustmentofhisdress.Mr.Browne,whosefacewasoncemorewrinklingwithmirth,pouredoutforhimselfaglassofwhiskywhileFreddyMalinsexploded,beforehehadwellreachedtheclimaxofhisstory,inakinkofhigh-pitchedbronchiticlaughterand,settingdownhisuntastedandoverflowingglass,begantorubtheknucklesofhisleftfistbackwardsandforwardsintohislefteye,repeatingwordsofhislastphraseaswellashisfitoflaughterwouldallowhim.
GabrielcouldnotlistenwhileMaryJanewasplayingherAcademypiece,fullofrunsanddifficultpassages,tothehusheddrawing-room.
