           Mr.HolohanandMr.O’MaddenBurkecameintotheroomInamomentMr.Holohanperceivedthehush.HewentovertoMrs.Kearneyandspokewithherearnestly.Whiletheywerespeakingthenoiseinthehallgrewlouder.Mr.Holohanbecameveryredandexcited.Hespokevolubly,butMrs.Kearneysaidcurtlyatintervals:

           “Shewon’tgoon.Shemustgethereightguineas.”

           Mr.Holohanpointeddesperatelytowardsthehallwheretheaudiencewasclappingandstamping.HeappealedtoMrKearneyandtoKathleen.ButMr.KearneycontinuedtostrokehisbeardandKathleenlookeddown,movingthepointofhernewshoe:itwasnotherfault.Mrs.Kearneyrepeated:
