           Mr.O’Connorshookhishead.Theoldmanleftthehearthandafterstumblingabouttheroomreturnedwithtwocandlestickswhichhethrustoneaftertheotherintothefireandcarriedtothetable.Adenudedroomcameintoviewandthefirelostallitscheerfulcolour.Thewallsoftheroomwerebareexceptforacopyofanelectionaddress.Inthemiddleoftheroomwasasmalltableonwhichpaperswereheaped.

           Mr.Hynesleanedagainstthemantelpieceandasked:

           “Hashepaidyouyet?”

           “Notyet,”saidMr.O’Connor.“IhopetoGodhe’llnotleaveusinthelurchtonight.”

           Mr.Hyneslaughed.

           “O,he’llpayyou.Neverfear,”hesaid.

           “Ihopehe’lllooksmartaboutitifhemeansbusiness,”saidMr.O’Connor.

           “Whatdoyouthink,Jack?”saidMr.Hynessatiricallytotheoldman.

           Theoldmanreturnedtohisseatbythefire,saying:

           “Itisn’tbuthehasit,anyway.Notliketheothertinker.”

           “Whatothertinker?”saidMr.Hynes.

           “Colgan,”saidtheoldmanscornfully.
