           Thetwowomenembraced;whilefromtheothersideofthelandauFatherCorbelan’semissary,withhisraggedbeardallstreakedwithgrey,andhigh,bronzedcheek-bones,stared,sittinguprightinthesaddle.ThenAntonia,dry-eyed,gotinbythesideofthestretcher,and,aftermakingthesignofthecrossrapidly,loweredathickveiluponherface.Theservantsandthethreeorfourneighbourswhohadcometoassist,stoodback,uncoveringtheirheads.Onthebox,Ignacio,resignednowtodrivingallnight(andtohavingperhapshisthroatcutbeforedaylight)lookedbacksurlilyoverhisshoulder.

           “Drivecarefully,”criedMrs.Gouldinatremulousvoice.

           “Si,carefully;sinina,”hemumbled,chewinghislips,hisroundleatherycheeksquivering.Andthelandaurolledslowlyoutofthelight.
