Towardstheplazaendofthestreettheglowingcoalsinthebrazerosofthemarketwomencookingtheireveningmealgleamedredalongtheedgeofthepavement.Amanappearedwithoutasoundinthelightofastreetlamp,showingthecolouredinvertedtriangleofhisborderedponcho,squareonhisshoulders,hangingtoapointbelowhisknees.FromtheharbourendoftheCalleahorsemanwalkedhissoft-steppingmount,gleamingsilver-greyabreasteachlampunderthedarkshapeoftherider.
“BeholdtheillustriousCapatazdeCargadores,”saidDecoud,gently,“cominginallhissplendourafterhisworkisdone.ThenextgreatmanofSulacoafterDonCarlosGould.Butheisgood-natured,andletmemakefriendswithhim.”
