Forallthat,thetwomenputthegreateststorebytheseexcursions,countedthemthechiefjewelofeachweek,andnotonlysetasideoccasionsofpleasure,butevenresistedthecallsofbusiness,thattheymightenjoythemuninterrupted.
Itchancedononeoftheseramblesthattheirwayledthemdownaby-streetinabusyquarterofLondon. Thestreetwassmallandwhatiscalledquiet,butitdroveathrivingtradeontheweek-days. Theinhabitantswerealldoingwell,itseemed,andallemulouslyhopingtodobetterstill,andlayingoutthesurplusoftheirgainsincoquetry; sothattheshopfrontsstoodalongthatthoroughfarewithanairofinvitation,likerowsofsmilingsaleswomen.
