Whathadhappened?Thewheezythumpoftheengineswenton.Hadtheearthbeencheckedinhercourse?Theycouldnotunderstand;andsuddenlythecalmsea,theskywithoutacloud,appearedformidablyinsecureintheirimmobility,asifpoisedonthebrowofyawningdestruction.Theengineerreboundedverticallyfulllengthandcollapsedagainintoavagueheap.Thisheapsaid‘What’sthat?’inthemuffledaccentsofprofoundgrief.Afaintnoiseasofthunder,ofthunderinfinitelyremote,lessthanasound,hardlymorethanavibration,passedslowly,andtheshipquiveredinresponse,asifthethunderhadgrowleddeepdowninthewater.TheeyesofthetwoMalaysatthewheelglitteredtowardsthewhitemen,buttheirdarkhandsremainedclosedonthespokes.Thesharphulldrivingonitswayseemedtoriseafewinchesinsuccessionthroughitswholelength,asthoughithadbecomepliable,andsettleddownagainrigidlytoitsworkofcleavingthesmoothsurfaceofthesea.Itsquiveringstopped,andthefaintnoiseofthunderceasedallatonce,asthoughtheshiphadsteamedacrossanarrowbeltofvibratingwaterandofhummingair.
