Therearemanyshadesinthedangerofadventuresandgales,anditisonlynowandthenthatthereappearsonthefaceoffactsasinisterviolenceofintention—thatindefinablesomethingwhichforcesituponthemindandtheheartofaman,thatthiscomplicationofaccidentsortheseelementalfuriesarecomingathimwithapurposeofmalice,withastrengthbeyondcontrol,withanunbridledcrueltythatmeanstotearoutofhimhishopeandhisfear,thepainofhisfatigueandhislongingforrest:whichmeanstosmash,todestroy,toannihilateallhehasseen,known,loved,enjoyed,orhated;allthatispricelessandnecessary—thesunshine,thememories,thefuture;whichmeanstosweepthewholepreciousworldutterlyawayfromhissightbythesimpleandappallingactoftakinghislife.
Jim,disabledbyafallingsparatthebeginningofaweekofwhichhisScottishcaptainusedtosayafterwards,‘Man!it’sapairfectmeeracletomehowshelivedthroughit!’spentmanydaysstretchedonhisback,dazed,battered,hopeless,andtormentedasifatthebottomofanabyssofunrest.Hedidnotcarewhattheendwouldbe,andinhislucidmomentsovervaluedhisindifference.Thedanger,whennotseen,hastheimperfectvaguenessofhumanthought.Thefeargrowsshadowy;andImagination,theenemyofmen,thefatherofallterrors,unstimulated,sinkstorestinthedullnessofexhaustedemotion.Jimsawnothingbutthedisorderofhistossedcabin.
