ThefirstthingthatK.partlysawandpartlyguessedatwasalargeknightinarmourwhowasshownatthefaredgeofthepainting.Hewasleaningonhisswordthathehadstuckintothenakedgroundinfrontofhimwhereonlyafewbladesofgrassgrewhereandthere.Heseemedtobepayingcloseattentiontosomethingthatwasbeingplayedoutinfrontofhim.Itwasastonishingtoseehowhestoodtherewithoutgoinganycloser.Perhapsitwashisjobtostandguard.ItwasalongtimesinceK.hadlookedatanypicturesandhestudiedtheknightforalongtimeeventhoughhehadcontinuallytoblinkashefounditdifficulttobearthegreenlightofhistorch.ThenwhenhemovedthelighttotheotherpartsofthepicturehefoundanintermentofChristshownintheusualway,itwasalsoacomparativelynewpainting.Heputhistorchawayandwentbacktohisplace.
ThereseemedtobenopointinwaitingfortheItaliananylonger,butoutsideitwascertainlyrainingheavily,andasitwasnotsocoldinthecathedralasK.hadexpectedhedecidedtostaythereforthetimebeing.Closebyhimwasthegreatpulpit,thereweretwoplaingoldencrossesattachedtoitslittleroundroofwhichwerelyingalmostflatandwhosetipscrossedovereachother.Theoutsideofthepulpit’sbalustradewascoveredingreenfoliagewhichcontinueddowntothecolumnsupportingit,littleangelscouldbeseenamongtheleaves,someofthemlivelyandsomeofthemstill.K.
