Theywentupsohigh,soveryhigh,thattheuglylittleducklingfeltastrangeuneasinesscomeoverhimashewatchedthem. Hewentaroundandroundinthewater,likeawheel.Hecranedhisnecktofollowtheircourse,andgaveacrysoshrillandstrangethathefrightenedhimself. Oh!Hecouldnotforgetthem-thosesplendid,happybirds.Whenhecouldnolongerseethemhedivedtotheverybottom.andwhenhecameupagainhewasquitebesidehimself. Hedidnotknowwhatbirdstheywereorwhithertheywerebound,yethelovedthemmorethananythinghehadeverlovedbefore. Itwasnotthatheenviedthem,forhowcouldheeverdaredreamofwantingtheirmarvelousbeautyforhimself? Hewouldhavebeengratefulifonlytheduckswouldhavetoleratedhim-thepooruglycreature.
