           ItwasthecreationofsuchworldsasthesethatseemedtoDorianGraytobethetrueobject,oramongstthetrueobjects,oflife; andinhissearchforsensationsthatwouldbeatoncenewanddelightful,andpossessthatelementofstrangenessthatissoessentialtoromance,hewouldoftenadoptcertainmodesofthought thatheknewtobereallyalientohisnature,abandonhimselftotheirsubtleinfluences,andthen,having,asitwere,caughttheircolourandsatisfiedhisintellectualcuriosity, leavethemwiththatcuriousindifferencethatisnotincompatiblewitharealardouroftemperament,andthatindeed,accordingtocertainmodernpsychologists,isoftenaconditionofit. 

           ItwasrumouredofhimoncethathewasabouttojointheRomanCatholiccommunion; andcertainlytheRomanritualhadalwaysagreatattractionforhim. Thedailysacrifice,moreawfulreallythanallthesacrificesoftheantiqueworld, stirredhimasmuchbyitssuperbrejectionoftheevidenceofthesensesasbytheprimitivesimplicityofitselementsandtheeternalpathosofthehumantragedythatitsoughttosymbolise.
