ThisimplicitreasoningisessentiallynomorepeculiartoevangelicalbeliefthantheuseofwidephrasesfornarrowmotivesispeculiartoEnglishmen.Thereisnogeneraldoctrinewhichisnotcapableofeatingoutourmoralityifuncheckedbythedeep-seatedhabitofdirectfellow-feelingwithindividualfellow-men.
Butamanwhobelievesinsomethingelsethanhisowngreed,hasnecessarilyaconscienceorstandardtowhichhemoreorlessadaptshimself.Bulstrode’sstandardhadbeenhisserviceablenesstoGod’scause:"Iamsinfulandnought—avesseltobeconsecratedbyuse—butuseme!"—hadbeenthemouldintowhichhehadconstrainedhisimmenseneedofbeingsomethingimportantandpredominating.Andnowhadcomeamomentinwhichthatmouldseemedindangerofbeingbrokenandutterlycastaway.
