           Atthisstageofaffairshewasinexcellentspirits,whichevensupportedhimunderlargeadvancesofmoney;forhispowersofconvincingandpersuadinghadnotyetbeen,testedbyanythingmoredifficultthanachairman’sspeechintroducingotherorators,oradialoguewithaMiddlemarchvoter,fromwhichhecameawaywithasensethathewasatacticianbynature,andthatitwasapityhehadnotgoneearlierintothiskindofthing.Hewasalittleconsciousofdefeat,however,withMr.Mawmsey,achiefrepresentativeinMiddlemarchofthatgreatsocialpower,theretailtrader,andnaturallyoneofthemostdoubtfulvotersintheboroughwillingforhisownparttosupplyanequalqualityofteasandsugarstoreformerandanti-reformer,aswellastoagreeimpartiallywithboth,andfeelingliketheburgessesofoldthatthisnecessityofelectingmemberswasagreatburthentoatown;foreveniftherewerenodangerinholdingouthopestoallpartiesbeforehand,therewouldbethepainfulnecessityatlastofdisappointingrespectablepeoplewhosenameswereonhisbooks.HewasaccustomedtoreceivelargeordersfromMr.BrookeofTipton;butthen,thereweremanyofPinkerton’scommitteewhoseopinionshadagreatweightofgroceryontheirside.Mr.MawmseythinkingthatMr.Brooke,asnottoo"cleverinhisintellects,"wasthemorelikelytoforgiveagrocerwhogaveahostilevoteunderpressure,hadbecomeconfidentialinhisbackparlor.
