Casauboninformsmethataproposalhasbeenmadetoyou,and(accordingtoaninferencebynomeansstretched)hasonyourpartbeeninsomedegreeentertained,whichinvolvesyourresidenceinthisneighborhoodinacapacitywhichIamjustifiedinsayingtouchesmyownpositioninsuchawayasrendersitnotonlynaturalandwarrantableINmewhenthateffectisviewedundertheinfluenceoflegitimatefeeling,butincumbentonmewhenthesameeffectisconsideredinthelightofmyresponsibilities,tostateatoncethatyouracceptanceoftheproposalaboveindicatedwouldbehighlyoffensivetome.ThatIhavesomeclaimtotheexerciseofavetohere,wouldnot,Ibelieve,bedeniedbyanyreasonablepersoncognizantoftherelationsbetweenus:relationswhich,thoughthrownintothepastbyyourrecentprocedure,arenottherebyannulledintheircharacterofdeterminingantecedents.Iwillnotheremakereflectionsonanyperson’sjudgment.Itisenoughformetopointouttoyourselfthattherearecertainsocialfitnessesandproprietieswhichshouldhinderasomewhatnearrelativeofminefrombecominganywiseconspicuousinthisvicinityinastatusnotonlymuchbeneathmyown,butassociatedatbestwiththesciolismofliteraryorpoliticaladventurers.Atanyrate,thecontraryissuemustexcludeyoufromfurtherreceptionatmyhouse.
