           Casaubonwasoutofthequestion,notmerelybecausehedeclineddutyofthissort,butbecauseFeatherstonehadanespecialdisliketohimastherectorofhisownparish,whohadalienonthelandintheshapeoftithe,alsoasthedelivererofmorningsermons,whichtheoldman,beinginhispewandnotatallsleepy,hadbeenobligedtositthroughwithaninwardsnarl.Hehadanobjectiontoaparsonstuckupabovehisheadpreachingtohim.ButhisrelationswithMr.Cadwalladerhadbeenofadifferentkind:thetrout-streamwhichranthroughMr.Casaubon’slandtookitscoursethroughFeatherstone’salso,sothatMr.Cadwalladerwasaparsonwhohadhadtoaskafavorinsteadofpreaching.Moreover,hewasoneofthehighgentrylivingfourmilesawayfromLowick,andwasthusexaltedtoanequalskywiththesheriffofthecountyandotherdignitiesvaguelyregardedasnecessarytothesystemofthings.TherewouldbeasatisfactioninbeingburiedbyMr.Cadwallader,whoseverynameofferedafineopportunityforpronouncingwronglyifyouliked.

           ThisdistinctionconferredontheRectorofTiptonandFreshittwasthereasonwhyMrs.CadwalladermadeoneofthegroupthatwatchedoldFeatherstone’sfuneralfromanupperwindowofthemanor.Shewasnotfondofvisitingthathouse,butsheliked,asshesaid,toseecollectionsofstrangeanimalssuchastherewouldbeatthisfuneral;andshehadpersuadedSirJamesandtheyoungLadyChettamtodrivetheRectorandherselftoLowickinorderthatthevisitmightbealtogetherpleasant.
