           Therearemanywonderfulmixturesintheworldwhichareallalikecalledlove,andclaimtheprivilegesofasublimeragewhichisanapologyforeverything(inliteratureandthedrama).HappilyRosamonddidnotthinkofcommittinganydesperateact:sheplaitedherfairhairasbeautifullyasusual,andkeptherselfproudlycalm.HermostcheerfulsuppositionwasthatherauntBulstrodehadinterferedinsomewaytohinderLydgate’svisits:everythingwasbetterthanaspontaneousindifferenceinhim.Anyonewhoimaginestendaystooshortatimenotforfallingintoleanness,lightness,orothermeasurableeffectsofpassion,butforthewholespiritualcircuitofalarmedconjectureanddisappointment,isignorantofwhatcangoonintheelegantleisureofayounglady’smind.

           Ontheeleventhday,however,LydgatewhenleavingStoneCourtwasrequestedbyMrs.VincytoletherhusbandknowthattherewasamarkedchangeinMr.Featherstone’shealth,andthatshewishedhimtocometoStoneCourtonthatday.NowLydgatemighthavecalledatthewarehouse,ormighthavewrittenamessageonaleafofhispocket-bookandleftitatthedoor.Yetthesesimpledevicesapparentlydidnotoccurtohim,fromwhichwemayconcludethathehadnostrongobjectiontocallingatthehouseatanhourwhenMr.Vincywasnotathome,andleavingthemessagewithMissVincy.Amanmay,fromvariousmotives,declinetogivehiscompany,butperhapsnotevenasagewouldbegratifiedthatnobodymissedhim.
