Ononepointhemayfairlyclaimapprovalatthisparticularstageofhiscareer:hedidnotmeantoimitatethosephilanthropicmodelswhomakeaprofitoutofpoisonouspicklestosupportthemselveswhiletheyareexposingadulteration,orholdsharesinagambling-hellthattheymayhaveleisuretorepresentthecauseofpublicmorality.Heintendedtobegininhisowncasesomeparticularreformswhichwerequitecertainlywithinhisreach,andmuchlessofaproblemthanthedemonstratingofananatomicalconception.Oneofthesereformswastoactstoutlyonthestrengthofarecentlegaldecision,andsimplyprescribe,withoutdispensingdrugsortakingpercentagefromdruggists.Thiswasaninnovationforonewhohadchosentoadoptthestyleofgeneralpractitionerinacountrytown,andwouldbefeltasoffensivecriticismbyhisprofessionalbrethren.ButLydgatemeanttoinnovateinhistreatmentalso,andhewaswiseenoughtoseethatthebestsecurityforhispractisinghonestlyaccordingtohisbeliefwastogetridofsystematictemptationstothecontrary.
Perhapsthatwasamorecheerfultimeforobserversandtheorizersthanthepresent;weareapttothinkitthefinesteraoftheworldwhenAmericawasbeginningtobediscovered,whenaboldsailor,evenifhewerewrecked,mightalightonanewkingdom;andabout1829thedarkterritoriesofPathologywereafineAmericaforaspiritedyoungadventurer.Lydgatewasambitiousabovealltocontributetowardsenlargingthescientific,rationalbasisofhisprofession.
