IsitduetoexcessofpoetryorofstupiditythatweareneverwearyofdescribingwhatKingJamescalledawoman’s"makdomandherfairnesse,"neverwearyoflisteningtothetwangingoftheoldTroubadourstrings,andarecomparativelyuninterestedinthatotherkindof"makdomandfairnesse"whichmustbewooedwithindustriousthoughtandpatientrenunciationofsmalldesires?Inthestoryofthispassion,too,thedevelopmentvaries:sometimesitisthegloriousmarriage,sometimesfrustrationandfinalparting.Andnotseldomthecatastropheisboundupwiththeotherpassion,sungbytheTroubadours.Forinthemultitudeofmiddle-agedmenwhogoabouttheirvocationsinadailycoursedeterminedforthemmuchinthesamewayasthetieoftheircravats,thereisalwaysagoodnumberwhooncemeanttoshapetheirowndeedsandaltertheworldalittle.Thestoryoftheircomingtobeshapenaftertheaverageandfittobepackedbythegross,ishardlyevertoldevenintheirconsciousness;forperhapstheirardoringenerousunpaidtoilcooledasimperceptiblyastheardorofotheryouthfulloves,tillonedaytheirearlierselfwalkedlikeaghostinitsoldhomeandmadethenewfurnitureghastly.Nothingintheworldmoresubtlethantheprocessoftheirgradualchange!Inthebeginningtheyinhaleditunknowingly:youandImayhavesentsomeofourbreathtowardsinfectingthem,whenweutteredourconformingfalsitiesordrewoursillyconclusions:orperhapsitcamewiththevibrationsfromawoman’sglance.
