Butthemoralgroundsofsuspicionremained:thestrongmotivesBulstrodeclearlyhadforwishingtoberidofRaffles,andthefactthatatthiscriticalmomenthehadgivenLydgatethehelpwhichhemustforsometimehaveknowntheneedfor;thedisposition,moreover,tobelievethatBulstrodewouldbeunscrupulous,andtheabsenceofanyindispositiontobelievethatLydgatemightbeaseasilybribedasotherhaughty-mindedmenwhentheyhavefoundthemselvesinwantofmoney.EvenifthemoneyhadbeengivenmerelytomakehimholdhistongueaboutthescandalofBulstrode’searlierlife,thefactthrewanodiouslightonLydgate,whohadlongbeensneeredatasmakinghimselfsubservienttothebankerforthesakeofworkinghimselfintopredominance,anddiscreditingtheeldermembersofhisprofession.Hence,inspiteofthenegativeastoanydirectsignofguiltinrelationtothedeathatStoneCourt,Mr.Hawley’sselectpartybrokeupwiththesensethattheaffairhad"anuglylook."
Butthisvagueconvictionofindeterminableguilt,whichwasenoughtokeepupmuchhead-shakingandbitinginnuendoevenamongsubstantialprofessionalseniors,hadforthegeneralmindallthesuperiorpowerofmysteryoverfact.Everybodylikedbettertoconjecturehowthethingwas,thansimplytoknowit;forconjecturesoonbecamemoreconfidentthanknowledge,andhadamoreliberalallowancefortheincompatible.
