ItwasnotasLakehadleftit,forthecoveredpartsoftheprimalmonstrosityhadbeenremovedfromtheimprovisedtable. Indeed,wehadalreadyrealizedthatoneofthesiximperfectandinsanelyburiedthingswehadfound—theonewiththetraceofapeculiarlyhatefulodor—mustrepresentthecollectedsectionsoftheentitywhichLakehadtriedtoanalyze. Thegasolinestovewasalsogone,thougharounditwefoundacuriouslitterofmatches. Weburiedthehumanpartsbesidetheothertenmen;andthecaninepartswiththeotherthirty-fivedogs. Concerningthebizarresmudgesonthelaboratorytable,andonthejumbleofroughlyhandledillustratedbooksscatterednearit,weweremuchtoobewilderedtospeculate.
