Wedidnotmention,Ithink,theirdisplayofthesameuneasinesswhensniffingaroundthequeergreenishsoapstonesandcertainotherobjectsinthedisorderedregion-objectsincludingscientificinstruments,aeroplanes,andmachinery,bothatthecampandattheboring,whosepartshadbeenloosened,moved,orotherwisetamperedwithbywindsthatmusthaveharboredsingularcuriosityandinvestigativeness.
Aboutthefourteenbiologicalspecimens,wewerepardonablyindefinite. Wesaidthattheonlyoneswediscoveredweredamaged,butthatenoughwasleftofthemtoproveLake’sdescriptionwhollyandimpressivelyaccurate. Itwashardworkkeepingourpersonalemotionsoutofthismatter—andwedidnotmentionnumbersorsayexactlyhowwehadfoundthosewhichwedidfind. WehadbythattimeagreednottotransmitanythingsuggestingmadnessonthepartofLake’smen, anditsurelylookedlikemadnesstofindsiximperfectmonstrositiescarefullyburieduprightinnine-footsnowgravesunderfive-pointedmoundspunchedoverwithgroupsofdotsinpatternsexactlythoseonthequeergreenishsoapstonesdugupfromMesozoicorTertiarytimes. TheeightperfectspecimensmentionedbyLakeseemedtohavebeencompletelyblownaway.
Wewerecareful,too,aboutthepublic’sgeneralpeaceofmind;henceDanforthandIsaidlittleaboutthatfrightfultripoverthemountainsthenextday.
