           Thereweretruncatedcones,sometimesterracedorfluted,surmountedbytallcylindricalshaftshereandtherebulbouslyenlargedandoftencappedwithtiersofthinnishscallopeddisks;andstrangebeetling,table-likeconstructionssuggestingpilesofmultitudinousrectangularslabsorcircularplatesorfive-pointedstarswitheachoneoverlappingtheonebeneath. Therewerecompositeconesandpyramidseitheraloneorsurmountingcylindersorcubesorflattertruncatedconesandpyramids,andoccasionalneedle-likespiresincuriousclustersoffive. Allofthesefebrilestructuresseemedknittogetherbytubularbridgescrossingfromonetotheotheratvariousdizzyheights,andtheimpliedscaleofthewholewasterrifyingandoppressiveinitssheergigantism. ThegeneraltypeofmiragewasnotunlikesomeofthewilderformsobservedanddrawnbythearcticwhalerScoresbyin1820,butatthistimeandplace,withthosedark,unknownmountainpeakssoaringstupendouslyahead,thatanomalouselder-worlddiscoveryinourminds,andthepallofprobabledisasterenvelopingthegreaterpartofourexpedition,weallseemedtofindinitataintoflatentmalignityandinfinitelyevilportent.
